On July 4, 1956, Betty Weinberger was sitting on the front patio of her home in Westbury, New York. Her 33 day old baby, Peter, was asleep next to her in a carriage. Betty decided to go inside for a few minutes while the baby slept, but when she returned all she found was an empty carriage and a ransom note. In the note, the kidnapper apologized but said he needed the money. He promised the baby would be returned "safe and happy" the next day if he was rewarded $2,000. Despite the kidnappers warning to kill the baby if she "made a wrong move," Betty immediately called the police. The police staged a fake ransom package, but the kidnapper never showed up. On another failed attempt to stage with the kidnapper, the police found a bag with another note--from the kidnapper--that said where to find the baby is everything went smoothly.
